AND FROM THE GROUND
THERE BLOSSOMS RED
LIFE THAT SHALL ENDLESS BE

LIEUTENANT JOHN NOBLE

MACHINE GUN CORPS

28TH SEPTEMBER 1918 AGE 30

BURIED: YPRES TOWN CEMETERY EXTENSION, BELGIUM

John Noble, a graduate of Glasgow University, was a school teacher at Henderson Street School, Glasgow. His inscription comes from the last verse of the hymn, O Love that will not let me go:
O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life's glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.
